Why We're Changing Our Treatment Menu: A More Personalised Approach to Massage Therapy and Bodywork
Why We're Changing Our Treatment Menu: A More Personalised Approach to Massage Therapy and Bodywork
For a long time now, I've felt that our treatment menu doesn't fully reflect the way we actually work.
It's not something that's happened overnight.
It's been brewing away in the background for years, and lately it's become harder to ignore.
Like many clinics, we have a menu with different treatment options, descriptions and names. It helps people decide what to book, which makes sense.
But the reality is that when someone walks through our door, I'm not really thinking about the treatment they've booked.
I'm thinking about them.
- What's going on in their body?
- How have they been feeling?
- What's changed since I last saw them?
- What do they need today?
Because the longer I've been doing this work, the more I've realised that bodies don't fit neatly into treatment categories.
Neither do people.
A person might come in with neck and shoulder tension, but the real story could be stress, poor sleep, grief, a demanding workload, caring for others, an old injury, or a combination of all of the above.
The body tells a story if we're willing to listen.
That's why I've never been comfortable with the idea of delivering the same treatment to every person who books a particular service.
And to be brutally honest, that's never how we've worked anyway.
In simple terms, we're moving towards a more personalised massage therapy model. Rather than choosing from a list of treatment styles, our focus is on assessing your body, understanding your goals, and providing the most appropriate treatment on the day.
Every treatment starts with a conversation.
We ask questions and we listen.
We assess and then we adapt.
Sometimes that means focused work on a specific area.
Sometimes it means taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture.
Sometimes what we thought we'd be working on at the beginning of the session turns out not to be the thing that needs the most attention at all.
And that's okay.
In fact, that's often where the best results come from.
One thing I've learned over the years is that what your body needed six weeks ago isn't necessarily what it needs today.
Life changes.
Stress changes.
Work changes.
Our bodies are constantly responding to what's happening around us, so it makes sense that our treatments should too.
People often ask whether they need deep tissue massage or something more relaxing.
My answer is usually the same.
It depends.
Sometimes deep work is exactly what's needed.
Sometimes a gentler therapeutic massage approach is far more effective.
Sometimes it's both.
As experienced massage therapists, our role isn't to fit you into a pre-determined treatment style.
It's to assess what's happening in your body and create a personalised treatment plan that supports your goals, whether that's pain relief, stress management, recovery, mobility, performance, or overall wellbeing.
For me, it's never been about fitting someone into a particular treatment style.
It's about using my knowledge, experience, skills and intuition to work out what's going to serve that person best on the day.
That's where our tagline comes from:
Clinical care. Compassionate touch.
Because great treatment isn't just about technique.
It's about understanding the body while also caring for the human being attached to it.
The clinical side matters.
The human side matters just as much.
What Does a Bespoke Treatment Mean?
It's a question we're asked more and more often.
A bespoke treatment is a personalised massage therapy session that's tailored specifically to you. Rather than following a standard routine, the treatment is guided by assessment, clinical reasoning and what your body needs on the day.
We consider your symptoms, lifestyle, health history, movement patterns, previous injuries and treatment goals before deciding on the most appropriate approach.
Your session may include therapeutic massage, deep tissue work, soft tissue therapy, relaxation-focused techniques, remedial massage approaches, or a combination of several different modalities.
No two treatments are exactly alike because no two people are exactly alike.
The treatment evolves based on what we find on the day.
What If You Didn't Have To Choose?
Which brings me to the changes that are coming.
For a while now, I've been asking myself a simple question:
What if you didn't have to choose?
What if your job was simply to tell us what's going on?
And our job was to figure out the best way to help?
Because let's be honest, most people aren't massage therapists.
You're not expected to know which technique, modality or treatment style is right for you.
That's what we're trained for.
A Change Is Coming
So over the coming months, you'll start to see some changes to our treatment menu.
The care itself isn't changing.
The personalised approach isn't changing.
We're simply creating a menu that better reflects what has always happened in our treatment room:
Bespoke treatments, tailored to the individual sitting in front of us.
Whether you call it massage therapy, therapeutic massage, remedial massage, bodywork or soft tissue therapy, our approach remains the same.
Assess first.
Listen carefully.
Treat the person, not the label.
Because ultimately, that's what we believe great care looks like.
Not one-size-fits-all.
Not following a script.
Not choosing a box and staying inside it.
Just thoughtful, personalised treatment that meets you exactly where you're at.
Clinical care. Compassionate touch.
Your body leads. We follow. ✨
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a bespoke treatment the same as remedial massage?
Not exactly.
A bespoke treatment may include remedial massage techniques, but it's not limited to a single modality. We choose the most appropriate approach based on your individual needs, goals and how your body presents on the day.
How do I know which treatment to book?
That's exactly what we're trying to simplify.
Rather than worrying about choosing the "right" treatment, tell us what's going on and we'll help determine the most appropriate approach.
Can a bespoke treatment include deep tissue massage?
Absolutely.
Depending on your needs, your session may include deep tissue work, therapeutic massage, relaxation-focused techniques, soft tissue therapy, remedial massage approaches, or a combination of several techniques.
What are the benefits of personalised massage therapy?
Personalised massage therapy allows treatment to be tailored to your unique needs rather than following a standard routine.
It means your treatment can adapt to support pain relief, injury recovery, stress management, mobility, performance, relaxation, or overall wellbeing, depending on what's most important for you at that point in time.
